OUR HISTORY
Technology built on over a decade of clinical research
2012
Synchron is born
Synchron is co-founded by Dr. Tom Oxley in Australia after an encounter with a young man experiencing "locked in" syndrome following a stroke. Dr. Oxley, a Neurointerventionalist, was determined to find a minimally invasive way to enable individuals to communicate despite physical limitations.
2019
SWITCH Trial
Four people living with paralysis took part in the first trial in Australia, where they received the device. The study met all safety goals with no serious side effects, and participants were able to use it on their own at home. The results were published in JAMA Neurology on January 9, 2023.
2022
COMMAND Trial
Six people living with severe paralysis took part in a U.S. clinical trial, receiving the device at three sites in New York and Pennsylvania. The study met its safety goals and explored how the device could restore control of digital devices. Conducted under FDA IDE oversight, the trial has completed 12 months of safety follow-up.
2026+
Current Trials
Our current trials focus on people who have paralysis in both arms. They explore how the BCI supports greater autonomy, independence, and privacy for participants, while also helping to ease the burden on caregivers.
